The New York City Department of Education is the department of the government of New York City that manages the city's public school system. The City School District of the City of New York is the largest school system in the United States, with over 1.1 million students taught in more than 1,800 separate schools.
Internships are hosted within the Division of Instructional and Information Technology (DIIT) at the NYC Public Schools.
Research Assistant
Data, Analytics, and Professional Learning
Aligned to its commitment to develop systems that are "for the schools, by the schools," the Division of Instructional and Information Technology (DIIT) at the NYC Public Schools pledges to continually engage multiple stakeholders for feedback and input throughout the lifecycles of each of its applications. Data gathered from user engagement is used to inform the development and enhancement of DIIT applications and to determine the support provided to schools.
To support these efforts, the Data, Analytics, and Professional Learning team works with application development teams to collect and analyze input from a variety of stakeholders, including families, students, and staff. The Research Assistant will support the Data and Analytics Team leading focus groups, developing measures for collecting user input, analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, and producing reports on user input and feedback.
Attend planning and debrief meetings with the Data and Analytics team and business analysts.
Attend focus group sessions with stakeholders, take notes, and support facilitation.
Collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data, including identifying themes across multiple types of data sources.
Support with the preparation of data reports and presentations.
Maintain accurate records of focus groups, safeguarding the confidentiality of subjects, as necessary.
Support with scheduling and tracking of focus groups, planning, and preparation meetings.
Develop working knowledge of NYC Public Schools systems, policies, and applications.
Attend working sessions with business analysts and the project team to discuss ongoing findings.
Develop graphic representations of data and findings.
A high degree of competency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
Experience collecting data from a variety of sources.
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Ability to follow protocols and standard operating procedures.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to meet deadlines and strong follow-through skills.
Knowledge of Lucidchart, or a similar diagramming application.
Ability to communicate with various audiences including families, technical staff, school-based staff, and leadership.
Demonstrated experience analyzing qualitative or quantitative data.
NYU Interns will be provided with an NYC Public Schools email address and will be expected to participate remotely via collaborative workspaces and videoconferencing platforms, like Microsoft Teams.
NYU Interns will be expected to work in-person one day a week at 335 Adams Street, Brooklyn, and will attend an in-person orientation session at the beginning of the internship.
