I am an intern for MindHive, a citizen science neuroscience platform that supports high school students in developing brain and behavior research experiments. My responsibilities have mainly involved educational research and learning design.
I have been conducting qualitative data analyses on students’ research proposals and post-study interviews from last year, exploring the relationship between participant experience and data quality. As I have a background in psychology, I have also been helping to update the MindHive school curriculum. I have been meeting with teachers to gather their input, and I have been putting together lesson cards that will be added to the MindHive teacher platform. These cards will hopefully improve the user experience for teachers on the platform, allowing them to more easily access lesson materials and customize their own curricula as they work through the neuroscience content.
My internship has given me the opportunity to engage with different groups. I have worked with several NYU associates, including the NYU Max Planck Center for Language, Music, and Emotion, as well as members of our ECT program. I have not only had the opportunity to interact with teachers, but also with students. Last month, I visited an 11th-grade class in East Village and provided research guidance to students as they developed ideas for their experiments.
I really enjoyed helping students think through their methodology, ensuring they weren’t trying to measure too many variables and helping them locate related studies for inspiration. It was very rewarding to watch students’ minds at work and directly witness MindHive’s impact on the classroom.
