First, make sure to check your degree requirements for our ECT programs (LTXD , G4L, PhD) so you know what's required in your program of study . Note that DMDL, G4l students can take two electives outside the ECT program if they wish.
If you have questions about program requirements, email your advisor or our Student Services team (altstudentservices@nyu.edu)
In selecting courses for the upcoming semester, refer to our courses page for courses offered in upcoming semester and other helpful tips.
ALBERT will always have the full listing of all courses across NYU (check NYU calendar to find out when Albert will list courses for upcoming semester). You can also refer to our courses Airtable (database), created and maintained by ECT, for other possible courses.
You can discuss with your advisor, ECT program director or peers for additional ideas.
Make sure to update your LTXD or G4L or PhD Planner once you have selected possible courses.
A J term course is an intensive course that happens over the Winter break (usually the first few weeks of the January semester).
If you are interested in registering for J-term, there is no advising hold that needs to be lifted, however, we still recommend connecting with your advisor for guidance on what course may be best suited for you depending on where you are in your academic career.
Credit Load Reminders:
For financial aid purposes, part-time graduate students who enroll in a total of 4.5 units in the January and Spring terms (e.g. 1.5 units in J-term plus 3 units in Spring term) will qualify for financial aid. Students who require full-time status for financial aid must enroll in a total of 9 units (e.g. 3 units in J-term plus 6 units in Spring term).
International students need to be at their typical academic full-time status (9-12 credits for Spring only); J-term courses will not count toward the Spring course load.
There is no additional student fee (just tuition) for J-term.
LTXD, G4L and PhD students can choose a specialization (or 'area of focus') as part of their degree by completing at least three specific courses related to their area of interest within the program. They are designed to help you gain important skills and experience in a more focused area.
Choose from the specializations below or work with your advisor to create a unique area of specialization tailored to your interests.
Note: specializations are NOT required and will not appear on your transcript.

There is lots of good info on this website, along with other NYU digital resources.
In addition, there are a number of more personal ways to seek help and guidance and to answers to questions you have about course selection and registration. It is up to you to take advantage of these resources and see which works best for you.
ADVISEMENT
Each student is assigned to a faculty advisor in their first semester. Your advisor is there to answer questions about things related to your professional interests and guide decision making around courses, specializations and careers. They also need to clear you to register!
Don't know who your advisor is? Email our Student Services team at altstudentservices@nyu.edu
Not sure how to connect with your advisor by Slack DM or email? Don't hesitate to circle back a second time. Still aren't hearing back? Please notify our Student Services team altstudentservices@nyu.edu.
STUDENT SERVICES
You can reach our Student Services team at altstudentservices@nyu.edu. They can help you with all administrative or systems or form related questions (e.g. graduation, OGS, holds, bursar, etc). And if they can't answer, they''ll let you know who can!
PROGRAM DIRECTOR
Camillia Matuk is the ECT program director. Feel free to reach out to her at any time (cmatuk@nyu.edu or DM on Slack).
See steps 1-5 outlined above (top of this page) to learn more about selecting courses, advising and registration. Note that you do not have to be cleared by your advisor to register for J term.
If you are having trouble, don't hesitate to contact our Student Services team (altstudentservices@nyu.edu) or your advisor for help (see question above: Who can I talk to about my Questions!)
If you are an international student, you must be registered for a minimum of 9 units before the add/drop deadline (check academic calendar to check on when that is) in order to maintain your F-1 or J-1 visa status. When choosing courses, it is important to pay attention to the modality (in-person or online) of the section you are signing up for.
Students with F-1 visas are allowed to take one online course per semester toward their full-time course load, so if you are enrolled in a total of 9 credits, 3 of those can be from an online course. This translates to 2 in-person courses and 1 online course.
Students with J-1 visas are only allowed to take an online course if they already meet full-time status requirements with in-person or blended coursework. This means that if you are enrolled in 9 in-person credits you are allowed to take an additional online course. Your online course will not count towards your required 9 credits for full-time status, however, it will still count towards your degree
When registering for courses, please make sure one of the following applies to you:
You are registered for a minimum of 9 credits (unless you are registered for thesis and internship, see below). In addition, you must be registered for at least two in-person courses to maintain your visa. Please read the guidelines above. Current US immigration regulations now only allow only 1 online course or up to 3 credits of online coursework to count toward your full-time enrollment.
If you are registered for internship and/or thesis, you can take less than 9 credits if you have fill out a Full-Time Equivalency Form and submit this form to steinhardt-registration-and-advisement-group@nyu.edu.
If it is your LAST semester of study and you have less than 9 units to take, fill out the Part-Time Enrollment Permission Form.
For information on Curricular Practical Training (CPT), click here.
If you have any questions or concerns, please schedule an online advising appointment with the Office of Global Services (OGS).
NOTE: In J term and Summer sessions you can take any number of credits, you do NOT need to fill out Full Time equivalence (FTE) form.
We have created sample course sequence options for reference.
