From Design to Implementation: Gamification in STEM Higher Education

Gamification is more than just giving points and badges to students. It requires knowledge of the motivational aspects, game elements, and design principles that can influence students´ performance. In this talk, the experience of gamifying a Calculus and Computer Programming Class will be presented. Moreover, its effects on learning performance, motivation, self-efficacy, and engagement will also be explained. This talk will end with the lesson learned from this experience.

About the speaker

Margarita Ortiz is a post-doc researcher from Ghent University (Belgium). She earned a BA in International Education and an MA in Higher Education with a major in Research and Pedagogical Innovations from Casa Grande University in Ecuador and a Ph.D. in Pedagogical Sciences from Ghent University. Dr. Ortiz is currently the director Center for Educational Research and Services (CISE) at Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL), Ecuador. She is also part of the LALA (Learning Analytics in Latin America) project, coordinating the ESPOL learning analytics partnership. Her research interests include gamification and pedagogical innovations using technology.
