Project description and background

The Health Department undertakes considerable data collection activities and shares data and analyses with the public through tools including EpiQuery and the Community Health Profiles. The audience for Health Department data includes community-based organizations, researchers, educators, policymakers, health care planners, city government, advocates, and others.

We seek an intern to participate in a project to redevelop the front end of the EpiQuery website, converting its layout and visualizations from Tableau reports to static, web-native content (HTML, CSS, JavaScript). This is a multi-stage project, starting from creating wireframes of existing Tableau reports, to replicating those layouts inHTML with embedded Tableau graphics, and, ultimately, prototyping visualizations utilizing web standard technologies to replace existing Tableau visualizations.

Learning objectives

The trainee will improve their understanding of data visualization and web development. They will get experience working with epidemiologic data sets, in particular survey-derived data and disease surveillance data.

The student will also learn basics of information privacy and public health data communications.

Expected deliverables

- Wire frames or other UX documentation.

- Prototype Tableau layout replacement: source code (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), documentation and, if appropriate, unit tests.

- If time permits, prototype web-native data visualizations using SVG.

- Summary presentation of project, including slide deck or narrative report.

Preferred skills: Front-end web development skills: HTML, CSS, Javascript. Some familiarity with web design and data visualization principles. Good communication skills, including technical writng/documentation. Tableau skills not required but are preferred.
